Oral Health Dangers of Getting Too Stressed Out

Posted on 5/15/2018 by Michael Westendorf, DDS
Stress Ruther Family Dentistry OH 45249-2383Being stressed out can increase your blood pressure and make certain medical conditions worse, but did you know that it can also affect your oral health?

Stress can actually cause some problems with your gums, teeth, and mouth. If you notice any of the following, it could be a sign that you're under more stress than you realize.

Canker Sores

We've all had those little white spots show up in the mouth. These canker sores often appear for no reason at all, and medical experts don't even know what truly causes them.

One thing studies have confirmed, though, is that people who are under a lot of stress tend to get more canker sores than those who aren't. These sores aren't really dangerous, but they're annoying and can hurt.

Cold Sores

Then there are cold sores. These sores are caused by a virus and are usually on your lips. Again, stress or feeling upset can cause more cold sores. They're not usually dangerous, either, but it is actually possible to spread cold sores to others. Come talk to us if you seem to get cold sores regularly. There are some medications that can help.

Grinding Your Teeth at Night

Do you often clench your jaws or grind your teeth while you sleep? You may not even realize that you do this. Some people even grind their teeth while they're awake! Stress can make you do this more often or grind down harder. This can cause your teeth to start wearing down and can also cause TMJ. That's an issue with the joint found just in front of the ear.

If you know you've been grinding your teeth at night, you might need a mouth guard. We'll look at how the grinding has been affecting your mouth and find a solution that works for you.
